This case study examines the treatment of a wound infection following a serious knee surgery
Submitted by: Maria Ocampo, Wound CNC, St Vincents Private Hospital, Sydney.
Patient History
• 74 man with history of left knee replacement in 2006 due to arthritis and gout.
• Frequent admissions to hospital with infection on the left knee.
• Decision made to remove infected knee prosthesis.
Problem
• Wound swab was positive of +3 Staph aureus.
• Inflamed and highly exuding wound.
• Change of dressings necessary 2-3 times a day due to volume of exudate.
Care Management Plan:
• Referred to wound CNC.
• Recommended application of an Eakin Wound Pouch (size 175×110 mm).
• To contain exudate.
• To reduce amount of dressing changes required.
• To provide a more efficient and effective wound care solution.
Outcome
• The patient reported that he was more comfortable as the dressings did not need to be changed too frequently.
• The eakin wound pouch stayed in situ for 5 days.
• The wound was able to be assessed without removing the wound pouch.
• Reduced inflammation surrounding the wound.
• Patient reported that there was minimal pain when the bag was changed.
