Celebrating my ostomy journey

Reflecting on 2024 has made me realise it was a huge year for learning, growth, and resilience.

Reflecting

2022 me was adamant that I didn’t want a stoma bag. My surgery was emergency, I was told it was my only option, and even then I still questioned whether just not waking up at all would be that bad.

The last year has really helped me find myself again, practice gratitude, and learn to love my body… even with my little bag attached to my stomach.

Embracing my stoma

2024 allowed me to go on my first summer holiday, having my stoma bag on show everyday. I went to several concerts, and had the best time! I enjoyed a few weekends away, with The Get Together being one of best and biggest highlights.

Exercise

My physical and mental health has soared within in the last year. My exercise routine is probably the best it’s been pre-surgery. After many years feeling unwell, and now feeling the healthiest that I’ve felt in years I feel so privileged to be able to exercise and I’m so appreciative that I can move my body. As well as the gym, I’m trying to be more consistent with Pilates and I’ve just recently started the Couch to 5K! Running has always been something I’ve been extra cautious with due to my stoma but it’s been a smooth ride so far, and I’m excited for a new challenge!

Products

Being confident in the stoma products I use has helped me to take the plunge and try new things. I’m so thankful that my stoma bags, eakin freeseal®, and REFRESH 3in1 spray work so well for me. I feel like my bag routine is the perfect fit for me!

Community & Tips

As much as I’m pushing myself this year, I’m also making sure I have time for self care, whether that’s reading a book, watching a comfort show or just resting.

I also feel so grateful for the amazing ostomy community, I’m so lucky to be able to use my platform to connect with so many wonderful people, who are also helping to break the stigma and use their social media to help educate others. And I’m delighted with the friendships I’ve made too.

This year will be a year of wedding planning, pushing myself, ticking off goals and embracing my body. All things that I wouldn’t be able to do today without my stoma!
